Zambian roads to be renamed after Geingob, Nujoma

Zambian president Hakainde Hichilema says two roads in Zambia will be renamed after former presidents Hage Geingob and Sam Nujoma.

Hichilema was speaking at Geingob’s memorial service in Windhoek on Saturday.

He said his country mourns together with Namibians over Geingob’s death.

“We reflect on the memories we share with president Geingob and his leadership in the region,” Hichilema said.

He said Zambians had suggested that Geingob’s name be remembered by renaming “a critical” road after him.

Another road will be renamed after Namibia’s founding president, Sam Nujoma, Hichilema said.

“I am a beneficiary of the introductory programme he led,” he said.

“The year I took office, I had to attend the Southern African Development Community troika, and he was the chairperson . . .

“He continued to always provide leadership at that platform,” he said.

“We acknowledge his remarkable leadership and true statesmanship,” Hichilema said.

He said Geingob’s contribution to the University of Zambia’s academic body of work is remarkable.

“I can competently say he contributed to Zambia,” he said.

Hichilema was an undergraduate student when Geingob was a scholar at the university.

Minister of defence and veterans affairs Frans Kapofi thanked the Zambian president for the gesture of renaming roads.
