Wentzel wins Sages Nationals

Kevin Wentzel from Walvis Bay won the Sages Nationals golf tournament over the weekend.

The event, which was sponsored by Momentum for the sixth consecutive year, was held at the Omeya Golf Club on 19 April and the Windhoek Golf and Country Club (WGCC) the following day. 

A total of 60 players participated, consisting of 35 from Windhoek, eight from Swakopmund, eight from Walvis Bay, six from Okahandja and three from Mariental.

Wentzel was a comfortable winner with an overall gross score of 145, to finish well ahead of the runner up Johan Grobler on 162. 

Wentzel also won the stableford A category with a score of 71, while Bertus Damon was the overall stableford winner with a total of 72.

Andy Langworthy won the stableford B division with a score of 68, Jurie Engelbrecht won the stableford C division with a score of 68, and Charl Wittmann won the stableford D division with a score of 67. 

Angie Lohmann was the overall female stableford winner with a score of 66, while Ian Wood won the stableford Madala Cup for golfers over 70 with a score of 67. 

Bertus Damon and Warren Theron won the stableford betterball competition with a score of 92, while Wally Bredenhann and Charl Wittmann were the runners-up on 86. 

The stableford four-ball team winners were Damon, Theron, Keith Gardiner and Mike Beavis with a score of 174. 

The nearest-to-the-pin winners at the WGCC were Koos Maartens (the third and 13th holes), Bertus Damon (ninth hole) and Wikus Herholdt (17th hole), while the winners at Omeya were Willie van Zyl (4th hole), Johan Grobler (7th hole), Andy Fallis (14th hole) and Angie Lohmann (17th hole). 

Since 2014 Sages has hosted eight successful fundraising events and distributed proceeds of more than N$1 300 000 to various charities.

Some of the beneficiaries include the Cancer Association of Namibia, Intelligence Support Against Poaching, the Hope Village Centre, SPCA, and various old age homes.
