Namibian DJ Tumi Mohamed is in the process of completing and releasing his first full musical project, titled ‘The Induction EP’.
The EP will be released in two parts, with the first part, consisting of six tracks, due out next Friday.
He says the title is in reference to the shift he is making as an artist and his foray into a new arena.
“This EP is basically about my introduction into the music game. I’ve been DJing for a couple of years now, so I felt like this was the right time, with the name and the following that I’ve created for myself, to present my music to the world.” he says.
The young artist has worked with Musketeers’ Zonesh, Slay J, Enkali, Lee Deep Soul, Wholesome Zhan, DJ Shoza and Mshizo as producers.
Vocalist Earthtonami is featured on the popular track, ‘Jungle Fever’, a song he refers to as one the favourites he has created. It has a techno soul element to it that makes it sound almost otherworldly, while the singer’s vocals give it a soft and soothing edge.
He describes the project as “very soulful” and something that transitions into a more uptempo vibe.
“If you’ve been to one of my sets, you would know that I basically gave two of my favourite sounds, whether it’s what I play or what I listen to on a daily basis. I basically put this into one EP, that is divided into two parts.”
Mohamed has been a mainstay in entertainment for several years now and remains one of the busiest music mixers, with his name popping up on the line-up of nearly all major events and gatherings.
After close to 15 years of honing his skills and six years as a professional, which includes playing at Burna Boy’s Namibia concert, he tells us that he felt it was time to move away from just mixing music, to producing it.
In the past, he has also worked with the likes of DJ Spuzza and Stanzo, and was even briefly a member of the now defunct RTE Records.
Across the border, you can catch him on line-ups for shows in Cape Town and Johannesburg, and even Ghana, proving that he is a valuable local talent.
He says he is generally inspired by musicians like Kabza De Small, Oscar Mbo, Kelvin Momo and Kanye West – who he admires for his resilience and approach to creativity.
“Kanye has really inspired me to be bold and go for everything I want and to believe in what I stand for,” he says.
It will be interesting to see how this transformation in his modus operandi pays off considering his obvious good taste in music and ability to bring people together.
