Wanaheda residents and pupils of the Faith Primary School in Havana celebrated a momentous occasion when they received their first ever multi-purpose sport court that will allow community members to engage in various sporting activities.
Previously, pupils engaged in various sporting activities on gravel and could not host other schools due to this.
The newly constructed sports court is equipped with top-notch facilities which aim to promote physical activity, teamwork, discipline, and perseverance among the students.
The facility was built by the international drilling contractor Northern Ocean, which recently built another multipurpose court for the People’s Primary School, valued at N$870 000 for both.
According to the project manager of the courts, Jona Ambuga, the school is currently involved in cricket, netball, football and volleyball, while the court is built in such a way that different sports codes can be played on them.
“All the apparatus is movable so when it is soccer they just put up the soccer posts. When it’s cricket they just use the cricket apparatus and when it’s volleyball, they move everything off and they use what they need. The court is marked out to cater for different sport codes so each code has a different color code that is marked on the field for the players to know,” he said.
“The kids previously played on gravel, so this is a big help as the school will now also be able to host teams from other schools,” he added.
At the handover ceremony, school prefect Angel Gases expressed gratitude on behalf of the school community, highlighting the collaborative efforts that led to the successful completion of the project.
Gases emphasised the transformative impact the sport court will have on the lives of students, fostering a sense of community and school spirit.
“We are incredibly thankful to Northern Ocean for their generous donation. This multi-purpose sport court represents more than just a facility; it symbolises opportunity, growth, and empowerment for all students at Faith Primary School.”
The handover ceremony was attended by Johnathan Shows, Africa regional manager at Northern Ocean, who reiterated the company’s commitment to supporting education and youth development initiatives.
Shows commended the dedication and hard work of all parties involved in bringing the project to fruition, emphasising the importance of providing students with access to proper facilities for holistic development.
“As many of you know, sport plays a crucial role in the development of our students, teaching them valuable life skills such as teamwork, discipline and perseverance. However, having access to proper facilities is essential for our students to fully benefit from these experiences,” he added.
The sport court, constructed with the assistance of project management partners VPC and Jona Ambuga, is expected to serve as a hub for sporting activities, events and community gatherings.
“That is why I am delighted to announce that my company Northern Ocean generously donated a new sports court. This facility will not only provide a safe and conducive environment for students to engage in various sporting activities, but will also serve as a hub for fostering a sense of community and school spirit,” Shows noted.
He said that the multi-purpose sport court stands as a symbol of opportunity and empowerment, adding that this will inspire students to reach their full potential, while making a positive contribution to society.
