A total of 50 passengers, including a driver, escaped a fire that broke out on board one of the City of Windhoek’s buses in Windhoek on Monday.
The bus was travelling from central Katutura to Cimbebasia and Kleine Kuppe.
City of Windhoek spokesperson Lydia Amutenya on Monday confirmed the incident, which took place near the Bernt Carlsson intersection on the Western Bypass at around 06h00.
She said the bus driver reacted promptly upon detecting a strong smell coming from the bus’ engine compartment.
“He then evacuated all passengers quickly and safely. Emergency services responded promptly to the scene, but were unable to save the bus, which had already caught fire by their arrival,” Amutenya said.
A replacement bus was deployed swiftly, minimising disruption for passengers who continued their journeys to their intended destinations.
“However, two female passengers reported experiencing potential smoke inhalation and were transported to a local hospital for evaluation,” Amutenya said.
She said the bus has been damaged beyond repair.
“The City of Windhoek prioritises passenger safety and maintains a commitment to providing a secure commuting environment,” Amutenya said.
She expressed regret for any inconvenience caused by the incident.
An investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the fire.
