Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) secretary for information and publicity Hidipo Hamata says the party is deeply disturbed and appalled by the recent statements made by works and transport deputy minister Veikko Nekundi during a Swapo rally in Emono last Sunday.
This comes after Nekundi said he wants the ‘democratic’ burial of the Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) and PDM presidents, referring to Panduleni Itula and McHenry Venaani
Nekundi says when he returns to Emono on 28 November, he wants to see Itula and Venaani’s graves at the sports grounds where Sunday’s event took place.
“His comments included a malicious desire to see the grave of our leader, McHenry Venaani, are not only unacceptable and disgraceful but also a stark violation of the principles that underpin our democratic and constitutional values,” Hamata says.
The PDM strongly condemns these remarks and demands an immediate retraction and apology from Nekundi, Hamata said in a media statement on Tuesday.
He said this rhetoric of hate and death wishes are unconstitutional, especially ahead of the upcoming presidential elections.
“We urge all leaders, regardless of their political affiliation, to refrain from making such toxic and harmful statements” Hamata said.
PDM calls on president Nangolo Mbumba and the Swapo leadership to publicly denounce Nekundi’s comments and to take appropriate disciplinary action.
