PRESIDENT Sam Nujoma was in a buoyant mood when he addressed an election rally in Katutura on Sunday.
Warning about “invading imperialists”, he said Namibians needed to be prepared to “shoot down” those who interfered in the country’s affairs. Introducing Swapo’s 14 candidates, nine of whom are women, to a few hundred people at the Multi-Purpose Youth Complex, the President warned Windhoek residents not to be swayed by “reactionary” forces when they went to the polls on Friday to elect City Council officials. He said that only by voting for Swapo candidates could the country’s national development goals be reached.”Reactionary forces may provoke you, but as long as you know where the mannetjie is …”, the President said to applause from the stands.”Forces of imperialism and capitalism are busy trying to create division.A newspaper saying this leader is good, this one is not,” said the President as he wagged his finger at the crowd.”We will expose them at a later stage,” he warned. He said more money had to be allocated to the Ministry of Defence so that they could protect the country against imperialists.”We must be prepared to fight them when they come,” he added. The President threatened to “shoot down” those who interfered in the country’s affairs.”The imperialists are now invading other countries. You think Namibia is an exception?” Half of Swapo’s 14 candidates up for election on Friday have served the City as councillors since the last elections. They are the Mayor Mattheus Shikongo (third on the candidates’ list), Deputy Mayor Joseph Auala (13th), Bjorn von Finckenstein (5th), Elaine Trepper (2nd), Boas Ekandjo (4th), Olga Katjipi (14th) and Hileni Ilonga (8th).A new candidate, Joseph Shikongo, tops Swapo’s list. The other candidates are: Agnes Mpingana, Linnea Shaetonhodi, Gerson Kamatuka, Milka Kalomo, Rosalia Sibiya, Mwadhina Veico and Mary Mulisa.Introducing Swapo’s 14 candidates, nine of whom are women, to a few hundred people at the Multi-Purpose Youth Complex, the President warned Windhoek residents not to be swayed by “reactionary” forces when they went to the polls on Friday to elect City Council officials. The other candidates are: Agnes Mpingana, Linnea Shaetonhodi, Gerson Kamatuka, Milka Kalomo, Rosalia Sibiya, Mwadhina Veico and Mary Mulisa.
