Baby killed in shebeen fight

POLICE at Keetmanshoop have arrested Hendrik Booysen, 30, in the murder of a 15-month-old child early yesterday.

Acting Karas Regional Commander, Nicky Nampala, said an eyewitness, who reported that two adults were in a fight, called Police to the Tseiblaagte residential area at 02h15 yesterday. Police found the baby, Desmond de Bruin, on the ground with multiple injuries.Booysen was also injured, but Police said his injuries were minor.”The deceased had scratches on his left arm, his forehead was swollen and there was an open wound at the back of the head,” Nampala said.The acting regional commander said the wound at the back of the baby’s head appeared to be the cause of death.Nampala said Police on the scene drove the still-alive baby, his mother, Maria de Bruin, and Booysen to the Keetmanshoop State Hospital, but the baby was dead on arrival.Johannes /Gumbe, an eyewitness to the fight at the shebeen selling home-brew in the Tseiblaagte residential area, told The Namibian yesterday afternoon that the suspect was fighting with the mother, who was sitting with the baby on a chair.”The baby fell during the fighting,” he said.Nampala said Booysen would appear in the Keetmanshoop Magistrate Court today on a charge of murder.Police found the baby, Desmond de Bruin, on the ground with multiple injuries.Booysen was also injured, but Police said his injuries were minor.”The deceased had scratches on his left arm, his forehead was swollen and there was an open wound at the back of the head,” Nampala said.
