DOES the Ministry of Basic Education and Culture do inspections at all the schools or only some? I am very disturbed by the conditions of schools in the Kunene Region, especially Mureti Secondary School in Opuwo.
Everything is dilapidated: broken or smashed windows and even the paint of the walls started to peel off and the school fence has also been removed. It does not look like a school. The Ministry says that it is concerned about the bad behaviour and performance of learners.I am of the opinion that the Ministry should first consider the condition in which the learners find themselves. The living environment of the school is not at all conducive to human habitation.I urge health inspectors to visit this school and see for themselves what I am talking about! Since Independence, some 15 years ago, Mureti Secondary School has never been renovated. What is the reason behind this omission? Is it because this school caters for mainly the marginalised communities, such as the Ovahimba ethnic group? This is the only secondary school in Opuwo! We hereby confirm to our Government that we, Opuwo residents, are also taxpayers and contribute to State coffers like others.State resources must be distributed equitably among the population. One more thing that our lethargic Ministers should know is that in the future we will get rid of them, if they are not working in the interests of the people who elected them to power.Even our Deputy Minister of Gender Equality and Child Welfare, who is originally from Opuwo, does not appear to see the condition of this school. Why is she so quiet? She must please speak out about the conditions at Opuwo in particular and the Kunene Region in general! The Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare should know that they also have the duty to protect the wellbeing of children. This Ministry must please do something about this school right away because these learners are the leaders of tomorrow and they need protection.Furthermore, I want to hear from the Ministry of Education how much money was allocated for school renovations in the 2005-2006 budget.Does the budget include the renovation of schools in the Kunene Region or not? They should bear in mind that, without proper facilities, the learners will not improve their performance. In light of the above, I would like to call upon our President Hifikepunye Pohamba to come to Opuwo and see for himself the conditions in which these poor learners are finding themselves.President Pohamba must come or send his people to the Kunene Region and do inspections at all the schools. We, as the parents and relatives of the learners who are currently studying at schools at Opuwo are in pain because when we send our children to school they are well disciplined and performing well in the lower primary schools. But now they are unable to perform because of the improper facilities and non-conducive environment they find themselves in.For that reason we call upon our President to get involved in this dilemma.Lorreta Kuvare OpuwoIt does not look like a school.
