THE National Field Hockey League came to an end recently and saw Pepsi UNAM winning both the men’s Premier as well as the men’s Reserve Leagues while Windhoek Old Boys Sports Club (WOBSC) topped the women’s Premier and Reserve League.
WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE The WOBSC women’s team was established in 2003 when they joined the premier ranks of the national league. Shayne Cormack and Michelle Milho broke away from Ramblers at the end of 2002 and formed a women’s section at WOBSC at the beginning of 2003.The first team mainly consists of students from Windhoek High School and St Paul’s College with Cormack, Milho and Celonika Robinson being the only seniors.Good under-18 players such as WHS Captain Janine Davin, Ellaine Kruger, Jerrica Cormack, Danelle van Wyk, Charlize van Der Linde, Lizelle van Der Walt and Maricke Thomas played a very important role in winning the first-ever national title for the WOBSC women’s team.Ramblers finished second and DTS third in the women’s premier league.WOMEN’S RESERVE LEAGUE JUST like their seniors, the WOBSC juniors captured the Reserve League title ahead of Wanderers and DTS II.WOBSC’s reserve side consists of schoolchildren and has proved to be quite competitive. This is proof that WOBSC has the best development programme in the national league.Schools’ coaches have also contributed significantly to the development of payers playing at WOBSC.The Sign Shop has played a huge role in transforming hockey at WOBSC over the past three years.PREMIER MEN PEPSI Unam retained the national title once again with a clean sweep in the national field league.Earlier this year, Pepsi Unam won the National Indoor title for a fifth consecutive year.Unam has been a dominant force in Namibian hockey since 2000 and claimed the title in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2005.Unam lost the title in 2003 by default because they did not travel to Oranjemund and lost home and away points.Pepsi Unam is by far the best team as they have been the main source for national team players for the past seven years. In the recent men’s national team that represented Namibia at the Africa Cup of Nations, Unam had eight players.Support by the main sponsor Pepsi, Unam and a good coaching staff are the other ingredients of this winning recipe.MEN’S RESERVE LEAGUE BY winning the reserve league, Pepsi Unam proved that its development programme is moving in the right direction and it is destined to produce another Siyabonga Martins, Heinrich Swartbooi, Bently Suze and Steven Abel. All these players came through the development programme and were further developed at Unam Hockey Club from 1997 before winning the first title for their team in 2000.The Pepsi Unam Reserve League consists of first- and second-year students at Unam, as well as well the best under-14 players playing in the Katutura and Khomasdal league run by the Hockey School of Excellence. This young team had to overcome the defending champions, DTS Draughters (a team consisting of former national players), as well as WOBSC I, who finished second and third respectively. The National Indoor League will start on January 16 next year at the DTS Hall in Olympia.Shayne Cormack and Michelle Milho broke away from Ramblers at the end of 2002 and formed a women’s section at WOBSC at the beginning of 2003.The first team mainly consists of students from Windhoek High School and St Paul’s College with Cormack, Milho and Celonika Robinson being the only seniors.Good under-18 players such as WHS Captain Janine Davin, Ellaine Kruger, Jerrica Cormack, Danelle van Wyk, Charlize van Der Linde, Lizelle van Der Walt and Maricke Thomas played a very important role in winning the first-ever national title for the WOBSC women’s team.Ramblers finished second and DTS third in the women’s premier league.WOMEN’S RESERVE LEAGUE JUST like their seniors, the WOBSC juniors captured the Reserve League title ahead of Wanderers and DTS II.WOBSC’s reserve side consists of schoolchildren and has proved to be quite competitive. In the recent men’s national team that represented Namibia at the Africa Cup of Nations, Unam had eight players.Support by the main sponsor Pepsi, Unam and a good coaching staff are the other ingredients of this winning recipe.
