KEETMANSHOOP residents will take to the streets today to demonstrate their support for the Municipality’s decision to terminate its contract with SELCo.
The Keetmanshoop Town Council last week unilaterally terminated its 15-year agreement with the Southern Electricity Compnay (SELCo) for the supply of electricity. The contract was granted after SELCo provided the previous Council, which was in serious financial trouble, with a N$5 million bail out.central to the termination of the SELCo contract was the Keetmanshoop Municipality’s claim that the South African-controlled company had failed to pay royalties amounting to N$140 000.Apparently the rejection of a tariff increase requested by SELCo had prompted the withdrawal of the royalties.
