WINDHOEK – Namibian driver Richard Himmel won the 38th edition of the Total Tara Rally on Saturday as his competitors faded in the final stages of the treacherous three-day challenge.
Himmel and navigator Adolf Botes, who last won here in 1999, took the lead in the very final stages of the 600-kilometre rally and held on to that advantage to take the chequered flag in Windhoek late Saturday afternoon. By so doing, the Himmel/Botes combination became only the eighth team to win the title twice since the very first race in 1969.Jaco van Dyk and Michel Rust brought their Land Cruiser home in second place while the Dick Cornelissen and his navigator Gunther Skutsch came in third to complete the list of top drivers.Deep Impact is the best WINDHOEK – Ten-year-old horse Deep Impact showed his younger counterparts a clean pair of heels when he won the Richelieu Champ of Champs race at the Windhoek Turf Club on Saturday.Deep Impact, the oldest horse still running, beat Supersolly with Porto Venere coming in third.Deep Impact won its owner, Ilona Majiedt, N$1 750 plus N$1 000 for coming in first in the A Division race over 1000m earlier in the day.In that race, seven-year-old Porto Venere ended second and five-year-old Crofter finished third.Deep Impact has won most races in its division this year, after a bad year in 2005 when it was plagued by an injury.Queens beat NDF in women’s football WINDHOEK – The national women’s soccer league kicked off on Saturday with Queens from Rehoboth beating the Namibia Defence Force (NDF) 5-1 at the University of Namibia field.NDF’s Uaeta Tuamunika scored first within five minutes after the kick-off.But the soldiers’ lead was short lived when Leandre Lukas equalised for Queens to go one-all into halftime.Lukas, who was nominated as junior sportswoman in this year’s Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) awards, showed her prowess with a soccer ball by scoring three more goals before teammate Silas finally nailed shut the coffin for NDF in the last minute of the match.Windhoek United, who played as City Sports in 2005, took points when Ramblers did not pitch for their encounter.By so doing, the Himmel/Botes combination became only the eighth team to win the title twice since the very first race in 1969.Jaco van Dyk and Michel Rust brought their Land Cruiser home in second place while the Dick Cornelissen and his navigator Gunther Skutsch came in third to complete the list of top drivers.
