I WAS watching ‘Talk of the Nation’ on NBC TV on 29/01/2007.
The topic of the evening was unemployment and its impact on the country’s economy. The panel consisted of prominent figures, from CEOs to Deputy Directors and even a Deputy Minister. What amazed me was the fact that these people were talking about what should be done – I wonder by whom, given their positions in the country. With a topic like that, I would rather have ordinary members of the community who are affected by unemployment as panel members to give their views, experiences and needs, and to have these Deputy Directors and Deputy Ministers in the audience to listen to the nation’s needs, other than having them talk about things they were supposed to implement 10 years ago already! The viewers do not have enough airtime to call in and air their views, but instead resort to listening to the people who were supposed to listen to them and do something about the situation long ago.It is disappointing to see that the representative from the Ministry of Youth and Employment Creation cannot even comment directly on what the Ministry is doing to help young unemployed people in the country, or maybe he did not understand the questions properly! I am disappointed!
