Namibia will send 25 athletes to Douala, Cameroon, to compete in the African Senior Championships from 21 to 26 June.
Christine Mboma is arguably the standout name on the Athletics Namibia list, with the 2020 Tokyo Olympics silver-medallist pencilled in to run in the women’s 100m and 4x100m.
It remains to be seen whether she can challenge for the podium given that she only recently returned to the track following a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Her times since returning do not suggest she will medal, however, Mboma’s team has maintained that she is a work in progress.
The event doubles as a qualifier for the Paris Olympics, providing an added incentive for Mboma and the likes of Gilbert Hainuca, who recently ran the 100m in under 10 seconds for the first time in his career when posting a wind-aided 9,86 seconds to win the Namibia National Senior Championships men’s gold.
Other notable names in the team include 400m specialist Ivan Geldenhuys, who narrowly missed out on the Commonwealth Games final a year ago, American-based sprinter Sade de Sousa, experienced triple-jumper Roger Haitengi, and 800m national champion David Dam.
