Mbumba mourns Malawi’s vice president

Nangolo Mbumba

President Nangolo Mbumba has extended a message of condolence to Malawian president Lazarus Chakwera, following the death of vice president Saulos Chilima in a plane crash on Monday.

Chilima’s death and that of nine others were announced on Malawian television on Tuesday after a search and rescue effort which commenced Monday morning when the plane disappeared.

“It is with profound shock and sadness that I have learned about the unfortunate incident involving a Malawi Defence Force aircraft crash, which led to the demise of Saulos Chilima, vice president of the Republic of Malawi, the former first lady of Malawi Shanil Dzimbiri and other Malawian nationals,” said president Mbumba.

“I have known Chilima as a leader with a deep affection for the people of Malawi and the Southern African Development Community region. It is unfortunate that vice president Chilima passed on at a time when he still had so much to offer to the people of Malawi and Africa. His loss will not only be felt by the people of Malawi, but the entire African continent,” said Mbumba.

Mbumba noted that Namibia stands in solidarity with the people of Malawi, adding that he was confident that they would rise from this terrible ordeal
