Storytelling workshop open for aspiring writers

On Saturday, writer Filemon Iiyambo will be hosting a ‘Basic Elements of Storytelling’ workshop aimed at equipping writers with the necessary tools to turn their ideas into prose.

In a recent interview with The Namibian, Iiyambo said the workshop offers aspiring writers a comprehensive exploration of essential storytelling components such as plot, setting, character development and conflict.

“Through a series of structured activities and discussions, participants will refine their writing skills and gain deeper insights into crafting compelling narratives,” he said.

The workshop will further focus on two fundamental aspects, theory and practice, he added.

On the day, participants will engage in interactive sessions aimed at enhancing their understanding of these crucial elements of storytelling, as well as presenting previously produced work to the group and facilitator to get feedback in the second part of the class, he said.

Iiyambo has been active in Namibia’s literary landscape for several years, contributing to both newspapers and literary magazines and earning recognition for his compelling short stories.

This includes ‘Chocolate Cake’, published in the 2018 Brittle Paper Anthology ‘Erotic Africa’, and ‘December’ being shortlisted for the 2021 Doek Literary Awards and being published in a 2022 Kenyan high school textbook.

He is also an educator by profession.

He said he was emboldened to create the workshop because he himself has been fortunate enough to learn from others.

“What I know I learned from other writers – Remy Ngamije, Troy Onyango, Zukiswa Wanner and Ndawedwa Hanghuwo. So, I’m giving back to others who are embarking on the same journey that I started on. I’ve been lucky to meet some all-time greats like Tsitsi Dangarembga, she was really enthusiastic to share what she learned with us, so who am I not to pass that on?”

The workshop will take place at Combretum Trust School in Windhoek from 09h00 to 13h30. N$300 will secure your spot.
