The Ongwediva Town Council has commenced the construction of a multi-sport complex valued at N$5 million.

The project marks a pivotal moment in the town’s development and commitment to enhancing recreational opportunities for its residents and visitors alike, says Ongwediva acting spokesperson Penda Kashihakumwa.

He says the first phase of the project is slated for completion by November.

“On Monday 3 June 2024, the Ongwediva Town Council officially handed over the construction contract to Windhoek Consulting Engineers, serving as the project consultant, and Roha Trading, entrusted with the construction responsibilities,” Kashihakumwa says.

He says the envisioned ground situated at extension 17 in Ongwediva signifies the council’s dedication to meeting the growing demand for modern facilities at the town.

“Designed to international standards, this state-of the-art complex will serve as a hub for both local and international sporting events, fostering a vibrant culture of athleticism and community engagement,” says Kashihakumwa.

He says the initial phase of construction will focus on the development of a soccer pitch, and encompassing essential elements such as earthworks, irrigation and subsoil drainage.

The complex will accommodate a diverse range of sport codes, including football, netball, volleyball and athletics.

“In future, the complex will incorporate additional sport disciplines reflecting the evolving needs and aspirations of the community. As part of the council’s strategic plan, the construction of the new sport complex underscores a proactive approach to addressing public demand for world-class sporting infrastructure,” Kashihakumwa says
