Speaker Peter Katjavivi congratulates newly elected speaker of the South African National Assembly

The speaker of the National Assembly, Peter Katjavivi, has extended his profound congratulations to Thokozile Didiza on her recent election as the speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of South Africa. 

This significant announcement follows a letter sent by Katjavivi on 15 June 2024, acknowledging the importance of Didiza’s new role and her dedication to public service.

In his letter, Katjavivi emphasised the critical timing of Didiza’s election, noting the essential role she will play in upholding and strengthening the democratic values cherished by both Namibia and South Africa. 

Katjavivi expressed confidence in Didiza’s ability to lead the National Assembly with distinction, drawing on her extensive experience in various ministerial positions.

“Your election comes at a pivotal time, and I am confident that under your able leadership, the National Assembly will continue to uphold and strengthen the democratic values our two nations so dearly cherish,” Katjavivi wrote. 

He further highlighted the strong partnership between Namibia and South Africa in fostering democracy, development, and regional stability.

The congratulatory message also underscored the anticipation of enhanced cooperation between the two nations, particularly within the framework of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Parliamentary Forum, which will soon be transformed into a regional parliament. 

Katjavivi expressed his eagerness to work closely with Didiza to further the mutual goals of prosperity and peace for the region.

I look forward to working closely with you to strengthen the ties between our parliaments and to promote the welfare of the people of our two nations,” Katjavivi said.

The Namibian National Assembly extended its best wishes to Didiza as she embarks on her new role, confident that her tenure will be marked by significant achievements and enhanced collaboration between Namibia and South Africa.
