Man killed in stabbing at Swakopmund

A 23-year-old man was killed in a stabbing at Swakopmund in the early hours of Sunday.

Erongo police spokesperson chief inspector Illeni Shapumba said the man, Angolo John Matokolo, was stabbed while trying to stop a group of men from damaging a taxi in which he was a passenger.

The incident happened around 03h30 on Sunday.

According to Shapumba, a group of six people went to a local drinking spot in a taxi that stopped in a parking area in Tamariskia.

Two women from the group found a taxi under attack and surrounded by a group of men, Shapumba reported.

He said the driver got out of the taxi to stop the group that was having an argument next to the car.

“The group threw stones on the windscreen of the car, prompting an occupant in the taxi [Matokolo] to remove the car for safety. In the process, the car was involved in an accident. The suspects ran after it and stabbed the victim in the middle of the chest with an unknown object, causing his death,” said Shapumba.

A witness’s cellphone that was in the car was also stolen.

Matokolo’s next of kin have been informed.

Three suspects have been apprehended, and police investigations continue.

Meanwhile, the police have invited Swakopmund community members to a public meeting at the Swakopmund Multipurpose Hall at 17h30 on 4 July. The meeting is aimed at discussing issues pertaining to crime and preventative measures.
