City of Windhoek emergency worker dies in ambulance accident

A city of Windhoek employee died in an ambulance accident after attending to an emergency on Sunday morning.

The deceased was driving with a colleague in the ambulance when it crashed into a truck.

City of Windhoek spokesperson Lydia Amutenya has confirmed the accident and says the two emergency workers were returning from a call at the Katutura Intermediate Hospital to Maxuilili Fire Station when the incident took place.

She says a team from the municipality was dispatched to the scene to remove the two victims from the wreckage. However, one of them did not survive while the other has been admitted to hospital.

“The Windhoek Municipality Council and the entire staff extend sincere condolences to the family of our deceased colleague during this difficult time. We also wish the colleague receiving medical attention at a local hospital strength and a speedy recovery,” the municipality says in a statement.

Sean Naude of the Namibian Marshall Rangers says the incident happened along the Natis road in Windhoek.

The victims are not yet identified, and the matter has been handed over to the Namibian Police, who could not be reached for comment.
