Fans call for Yo Maps’ release

Some fans of renowned Zambian artist Elton Mulenga, popularly known as Yo Maps, have taken to social media, calling for his release after he was detained in Namibia.

Yo Maps was detained over the weekend by Namibian immigration officers due to alleged complications related to his immigration status during his visit on Saturday.

Yo Maps performed at a local club in Windhoek at an event called Zambian Nights.

A Zambian institution, Crowd Intelligence Services’ senior intelligence officer, Lungu Nathan, wrote a letter to the Namibian government pleading for the artist’s release.

In the letter dated 15 July 2024, Nathan said the arrest has not only impacted the artist’s professional commitments but has also caused significant personal distress.

“We believe that Yo Maps’ intent was purely to entertain and contribute to the cultural tapestry of Namibia. His presence not only delights audiences but also contributes economically through event revenues, thereby benefiting both Namibian and Zambian communities,” he said.

Nathan said they are requesting a review of Mulenga’s case and considering his immediate release, to allow him to continue his professional engagements.

“Given the circumstances, consider waiving any penalties or adjusting his status to facilitate his stay and activities in Namibia. Collaborate with relevant Zambian authorities to establish clear guidelines for artists and performers travelling between our countries, preventing similar occurrences in the future,” he said.

The artist previously toured Namibia in December 2023.
