Windhoek Old Boys Sports Club made a clean sweep of the titles at the Old Mutual Wanderers Hockey Night League when they won both the men and women’s finals on Friday night.
In the men’s final WOB came up against a determined School of Excellence (SoE) who pushed them all the way.
After a goalless first three quarters, the match seemed to be heading for a penalty shoot-out, but WOB finally got the winner through a field goal by Dylan Finch midway through the final quarter.
Last Thursday, WOB stormed into the men’s final after beating Wanderers 3-0 in their semifinal encounter.
Captain Ernest Jacobs opened their account with a short corner goal at the end of the first quarter, while Anrich Loftie-Eaton made it 2-0 from another short corner midway through the second quarter.
Jan Izak de Villiers sealed their victory with a field goal in the final quarter.
The other men’s semifinal between SoE and Saints was a humdinger with SoE snatching a thrilling 3-2 victory.
SoE started with a bang as Delron Handura scored a field goal in the opening minute, and when Kavee Tjikuniva added a second field goal six minutes later they were leading 2-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Saints opened their account with a short corner goal by Owen Hatton shortly after halftime, but Tjikuniva stretched SoE’s lead to 3-1 with another field goal in the fourth quarter.
Saints struck back with another Hatton short corner goal in the final stages, but it wasn’t enough as SoE held on for a close victory.
In the women’s final, WOB posted a dominant victory, despite going behind early on.
Daniela Walder put Wanderers ahead with a field goal after only two minutes, but WOB gradually took control of the match.
Jocelle Wessels equalised with a field goal in the second quarter, while three goals in five minutes in the third quarter by Jivanka Kruger, Adore Meyer and Wessels put them in control with a 4-1 lead. Wessels put the icing on the cake when she completed her hattrick with a field goal in the final quarter.
In the women’s semifinals, WOB beat DTS 2-0 through goals by Wessels and Sue-Lize Henning, while Wanderers advanced to the final by default after a power failure ended their match against Saints.
