Namibian youth from various schools and dance groups in Windhoek celebrated International Youth Day on Monday.

The celebration was hosted by the European Union (EU) Delegation to Namibia, in collaboration with five EU member states’ embassies and the

Ombetja Yehinga Organisation (OYO) in Katutura.

The event aimed to elevate youth issues within the international community, while celebrating the potential of youth as partners in the global society.

According to a statement from EU Delegation to Namibia spokesperson Twaku Kayofa, the event featured enthusiastic participation from seven schools and three dance groups based in Windhoek.

“These young talents showcased their creative dance moves and artistic flair, making the competition a truly memorable experience. Top honours were awarded to Immanuel Shifidi Secondary School, which claimed first prize, followed by People’s Primary School in second place, and the DC Dance Crew in third,” he said.

EU ambassador Anna Beatriz Martins emphasised the importance of empowering youth.

“This day is a day to honour the youth of Namibia, to encourage the youth to participate fully in the development of our societies, to foster social innovation and change, and to eradicate inequalities,” Martins said.

According to Martins, empowered youth are the cornerstone of any free, democratic and prosperous society.

Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service acting director Mikka Asino highlighted the significance of International Youth Day as a moment to reflect on the vital role young people play in shaping the future.

“In Namibia, where youth make up the majority of our population, their ideas, energy and commitment are essential to our national development. Our youth are the heartbeat of our nation, driving innovation and stirring the winds of change that propel us forward,” he said.
