Farmers urged tounite amid drought

The Namibia Agricultural Union (NAU) has urged farmers to unite to lessen the negative impact of drought as they navigate the crisis.

The union says the challenges farmers are currently facing are overwhelming.

According to the latest issue of the NAU newsletter, the union says Namibia has experienced a cycle of drought for the past 11 years, with four of these (2013, 2016, 2019 and 2024) declared national emergencies by the president.

The union expresses gratitude to vice president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and Cabinet ministers for inviting farmer representatives to discuss the current situation and explore solutions to benefit both the community and producers.

It says over the past decade, persistent droughts have placed considerable strain on the agricultural sector as producers struggled with stagnant prices while production costs continued to rise due to international conflicts.

Despite various strategies to endure these harsh conditions, it seems the challenges are intensifying.

“Nonetheless, it is essential that we do not become overwhelmed by the situation, but maintain our focus on finding solutions,” the NAU urges.

The union has been working with three other farmers’ unions since January to address the drought crisis in partnership with the government.

The government wants to support the agricultural sector, which may significantly impact the rural economy, job creation, food production and self-sufficiency.

The focus is on implementing a targeted plan to effectively deliver aid to those in need.

In addition, the union has produced and shared 20 videos with every member, offering practical solutions and emotional support to help producers and their families cope with challenges.

“Emphasis is also placed on supporting women on farms, who play a crucial role in maintaining family stability,” the NAU says.

It also expresses gratitude for private initiatives that provide direct assistance to individual farmers.

“It is critical for local communities to stay engaged during these challenging times. Social gatherings could help ease the burden and offer support while promoting unity,” the union says.
