Fashion designer and Swakopmund Fashion Week founder Christ ‘Lao’ Shameulu has been nominated for the Nairobi Foya Global Awards’ FashionPreneur of the Year category.
The nomination recognises her commitment to the fashion industry, highlighting the significant growth in the overall creative scene.
Renowned for honouring remarkable entrepreneurial accomplishments across Africa, the Foya Global Awards have had significant influence over the fashion sector.
The annual event has gained recognition for its emphasis on cultural heritage, sustainability and giving local and international designers a platform.
“I am incredibly humbled and honoured to be nominated. In addition to representing my journey, it also symbolises the combined efforts of all those who think that fashion can inspire change and generate opportunities,” says Shameulu.
“It serves as a reminder that our efforts are recognised, appreciated and honoured globally. It also inspires me to keep pushing the limits of what is feasible in the fashion industry,” the designer adds.
Shameulu remarks that the local fashion industry is currently at a crucial point, and it promises excitement.
“There is a rising demand for regionally produced goods that honour our rich cultural history,” she says.
Notwithstanding these obstacles, Shameulu says the industry still faces difficulties like restricted funding, restricted access to resources, and the need for additional venues for up-and-coming designers to exhibit their work.
She says the industry has a strong sense of community and a lively spirit that encourages innovation and creativity.
“I am happy to be a part of this transformative journey, and I see a bright future for fashion in Namibia,” she says.
“One of my biggest accomplishments to date is the founding of Swakopmund Fashion Week. The occasion has developed into a top venue for designers, giving them a chance to present their work to a wide range of viewers.
“We have also contributed to projects that support fashion sustainability by highlighting the use of regional materials and customary craftsmanship. In addition to showcasing Namibian talent, our work has made it possible for us to collaborate with foreign designers and brands,” says Shameulu.
The Foya Global Awards are scheduled for October.
The event will be held in Kenya and will bring together some of Africa’s most brilliant entrepreneurial minds.
“It is an honour to be a part of such an esteemed gathering and I look forward to representing Namibia on this grand stage,” she says.
She continues that the nomination represents a win for Namibia’s entire creative sector.
“It represents our advancements and our capacity to leave a lasting impression on the world scene. I encourage all Namibians to vote and assist us in bringing this award to Namibia.”
