Taxi, bus fares to go up this month

TAXI and bus fares will go up by 10 per cent this month, the Namibia Bus and Taxi Association (Nabta) announced yesterday.

Nabta President Magnus Nangombe told The Namibian that the decision was made on Monday and the Ministry of Works had been informed of it. The association has not yet decided when the increase will take effect.”The [Nabta] office is busy with this and I hope by Friday [tomorrow] they will issue a statement on it,” said Nangombe.Nangombe said taxi and bus fares had not been increased since February, despite a number of petrol price hikes.”If we do not increase, some vehicles will end up unfit to transport people,” he said. The standard taxi fare in Windhoek will increase from N$7 to N$7,50.People travelling by bus between Windhoek and Oshakati will now pay N$143.Nangombe said the complete list of bus fares would be released soon.Fuel prices have increased six times this year, the latest increase coming into force on Tuesday.
