More golf tournaments needed

MARIENTAL – Namibia’s first black professional golfer, Joe Nawanga, says more competitive golf tournaments are needed if the country’s golfers are to be competitive at regional and international level.

Nawanga told Nampa during a golf coaching course in Mariental on Thursday that the country only has the Namibia Professional Golf Association (PGA) competition, and that is not enough. He said for Namibia to have more competitions, more golf courses are needed, adding that the dream could only be realised if more private companies rally behind the sport.”I hardly have any challenge locally, but golfers in neighbouring countries are on the golf courses almost every second week,” he said.Nawanga said in this year’s edition of the Namibia PGA scheduled for November, he aims to end within the top 120 positions to secure a tour cut next season.Local golfers have not won the event since 2006.NampaHe said for Namibia to have more competitions, more golf courses are needed, adding that the dream could only be realised if more private companies rally behind the sport.”I hardly have any challenge locally, but golfers in neighbouring countries are on the golf courses almost every second week,” he said.Nawanga said in this year’s edition of the Namibia PGA scheduled for November, he aims to end within the top 120 positions to secure a tour cut next season.Local golfers have not won the event since 2006.Nampa
