PRETORIA – Love is certainly in the air at Loftus Versfeld this season. While the Blue Bulls battle it out in their quest to take the Currie Cup, Cupid has been shooting his arrows at the rugby union with a spate of engagements and babies being reported at Loftus.
Afrikaans Sunday newspaper Sondag waxed lyrical about the spring season that descended on the stadium, with Springbok captain Victor Matfield topping the list with the news that he and wife Monja are expecting their second child. Matfield confirmed the news, and expressed his delight that his daughter Jaime would finally be getting a playmate but laughed at the fact that so many of the “Loftus family” were lining up to tie the knot.”It’s right, the guys need to get hitched,” he laughed. The newspaper reported that the first engagement was that of flyhalf Morné Steyn and his girlfriend Stella, followed within days by the news that forwards coach Johan van Graan had popped the question to his longtime girlfriend Melissa. The love bug couldn’t stop there, with new doctor Org Strauss, who only joined the team from the Cheetahs in May, asking his girlfriend Leandra to marry. The newspaper also reported that scrumhalf JP Joubert was readying himself to pop the question, while Springbok number 8 Pierre Spies would also marry in December. In between there was the news that old Bull Jaco van der Westhuyzen and his wife Corlia had given birth to their second child and long tales of former fullback Johan Roets, who played both mom and dad to his infant while his wife Bronwyn was away in Beijing with the Paralympic side.Nampa-SapaMatfield confirmed the news, and expressed his delight that his daughter Jaime would finally be getting a playmate but laughed at the fact that so many of the “Loftus family” were lining up to tie the knot.”It’s right, the guys need to get hitched,” he laughed. In between there was the news that old Bull Jaco van der Westhuyzen and his wife Corlia had given birth to their second child and long tales of former fullback Johan Roets, who played both mom and dad to his infant while his wife Bronwyn was away in Beijing with the Paralympic side.Nampa-Sapa
