Finance Deputy Minister, Tjekero Tweya has urged Namibians to get into the habit of reading and studying during the official launching of First National Bank (FNB)’s Centenary Book.
Tweya said Namibians are depriving themselves of reading, adding that knowledge is the key for any development to take place in any society. A very good example of reading and learning is found in none other than the Founding Father and former Namibian President Sam Nujoma.At his age, he has registered as a Geology student at the University of Namibia (UNAM) and is still passionate to read, do a lot of research and gained knowledge.This is surely an example to all of us, a good quality to improve wisdom, he said.If all Grade 1 learners become passionate with reading at an early stage of primary education, Namibians will further improve on academic performances at schools, according to the deputy minister.He commended FNB that has sponsored the production and printing of three books to date.- Nampa Former SA Chief Justice to speak at LAC anniversary celebrations * The Legal Assistance Centre (LAC) will formally celebrate its 20th anniversary with Justice Arthur Chaskalson, former Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court of South Africa.According to a media statement issued by LAC on Tuesday, this special dinner to be held on 14 November 2008 will highlight the victories and work of the LAC during the past 20 years and talk about the role of human rights in modern-day Namibia.”Justice Arthur Chaskalson will deliver the keynote address at the gala dinner.Justice Chaskalson was not only an ardent human rights lawyer in southern Africa, but also represented the LAC against the Apartheid Government when it attempted to close the LAC,” said the statement.Justice Chaskalson was one of the consultants providing technical assistance to Namibia’s Constituent Assembly in drafting Namibia’s progressive Constitution in 1989 and early 1990.He became the Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court of South Africa in 1994, where he served with dedication and passion until his retirement in 2005, said the LAC.- Nampa Opuwo wants to host N$54,7 million cultural centre * The town of Opuwo has been identified as the most favourable place so far to construct a government-run cultural village for the Kunene Region.This transpired during a consultative meeting held here on Tuesday between the communities of the Epupa and Opuwo Constituencies and the Ministry of Youth, National Service, Sports and Culture to find out where in the Kunene Region the multimillion-dollar cultural village could be set up.The ministry wants the region to propose three possible places to which it would send consultants to carry out feasibility studies so as to establish the viability of the nominated places.Government has budgeted an amount of N$54,7 million for each of the country’s 13 regions to construct cultural villages through the National Development Plan III (NDP 3) under the sub-section Culture.The Epupa and Opuwo communities indicated that Opuwo is already attracting many visitors to the region, and is thus the ideal place to construct the cultural centre.The community also submitted motivations that Opuwo was well-positioned to benefit the people of the Epupa and Sesfontein Constituencies at the same time, adding that Opuwo is a true representation and reflection of the cultural diversity of the people of the Kunene Region traditional cultural communities are found there.- Nampa Rundu’s N$50m shopping mall * The construction of another multimillion-dollar shopping mall at Rundu is scheduled for completion by the end of October this year.The first shopping complex which opened its doors at Rundu in September this year was the Pick n Pay complex, constructed at a cost of N$5 million.The new N$50 million shopping complex, the biggest shopping complex in the town of Rundu, was initially planned for completion in June this year but was delayed by several workers’ boycotts as well as heavy rains early this year.The contractor, Chan Close Corporation’s Managing Director Stina Wu informed Nampa yesterday that they are currently finalising some minor work, such as the painting of the building.The shopping complex that is set to accommodate about 55 small shops.The first floor of the shopping mall was completed in September this year.So far, shop outlets such as Shoprite supermarket, the Hungry Lion fast-food outlet as well as Pep and Big Daddy clothing stores have opened their doors in the shopping mall.The construction of the shopping complex started early last year, and generated over 200 employment opportunities for the local people.Chan Close Corporation is a
