Seeing red over REDs

THE management committee of the Association of Local Authorities in Namibia (ALAN) has called on Government to do away with regional electricity distributors (REDs), which it says are denying local authorities a rightful source of income.

REDs has been a highly controversial issue for local authorities, who have criticised the initiative as a threat to their profitability, with those already involved wanting out. The Namibia Electricity Distribution Industry Summit is set to take place in early November, at which REDs will be discussed by local authorities, regional councils, the CEOs of Nored, Erongo RED and Cenored, and others in the industry. At a meeting earlier this month, ALAN urged that local authorities receive proper subsidies to assist in service delivery, as their own resources are too limited to provide effective service delivery and economic growth.
