WITH reference to Alfredo Tjiurimo Hengari’s Post-Scriptum of October 10, I would like to take issue with the following.
1. White privilege According to its definition, a right granted to a person class or group. He refers to the white ownership of the economy as a privilege. So according to this definition the economy in effect was granted to the whites.By whom might I ask? No one gave us the economy. It was worked for.We did not come to this country and ask for someone to develop it for us, we did it ourselves.2. Whites in politics Contrary to what you might think the average white person in the world has absolutely no interest in politics. We think that to improve your circumstances you have to work. Many black Namibians (and most Africans) on the other hand see politics as the easy way to improve one’s position in life.Except for SA, Botswana and Namibia, the richest people in the rest of Africa are all politicians.Every time an African politician opens his or her mouth it is to reinforce the lie that blacks are victims and it is up to someone else to help them.Remember when President Pohamba told someone that if he wanted a toilet he would give him a spade? Look how that went down with a faction of the party. If the governments in Africa stopped begging from the rest of the world and started putting out the message that the only way to improve your lot was to work hard, then maybe whites would be more interested in politics.Interestingly it seems that the most developed countries distrust their politicians the most. One only has to read the SMS page in The Namibian to realise that most of them are merely begging pleas to the government.3. Whites and Affirmative Action The affirmative action instituted by the National Party in SA was aimed at Afrikaners and not whites in general. The English-speaking whites had no need of affirmative action in the public service, or for that matter in the private sector, as we were already the most highly educated group in the country so had naturally filled most of the positions. We were also of the opinion that we wanted educated, hard-working people in the public service and not use the public service as a job creation exercise.(Unlike Namibia where we have about 40 000 surplus public servants) The National Party government also did not institute any form of coercion on English-speaking companies to employ Afrikaners. They merely helped them to form companies in order to be part of the private sector.Strange, is it not, that the richest black Namibians are those who started their businesses before Independence in the north of the country where whites were not allowed to own businesses.Local government is the one level where I think the whites would like more say.The state of the country’s local authorities are deplorable and the only way to fix them is to get politics out of the councils.Elect people via the ward systems so that the elected are directly responsible to the ratepayers and not the party bosses in Windhoek. And lastly, the Government could do worse than hold up the whites as an example for the rest of the country. After all we are the most law-abiding group in the country, pay the majority of the taxes, do most of the volunteer work, and do not throw rubbish everywhere. There is no reason an informal settlement has to look like a rubbish dump. Most of the inhabitants say they have no work, so they have time to clean their own place instead of begging someone else to do it.Proud To be white Walvis Bay Note: Name and address provided-EdHe refers to the white ownership of the economy as a privilege. So according to this definition the economy in effect was granted to the whites.By whom might I ask?
