THE Namibia Amateur Golf Union (NAGU) and Namibia Beverages will host the Coca-Cola Windhoek Golf Open at the Windhoek Golf and Country Club this weekend.
The event is sponsored by Namibia Beverages for the seventh year running. The Windhoek Open is one of the most prestigious tournaments in Namibia, which attracts over 120 players from all over the country. The tournament is sanctioned by the NAGU and the Namibia Amateur Ladies Golf Union (NALGU) as contributing to their respective orders of merit.Men will play in three divisions, which include the A, B and C, and women in one division. The tournament will be played on both Saturday and Sunday. The president of NAGU, Corneels Jafta, says they believe the event will grow from strength to strength, “especially with the long-term involvement of a corporate giant such as Namibia Beverages and an international brand such as Coca-Cola”.The value of the sponsorship for this year amounts to N$12 000.* Meanwhile, The Associated Press reports that Tiger Woods’ New Zealand-born caddie has made the most of his employer’s injury-enforced absence from golf to raise 1 million New Zealand dollars (US$620 000) for child cancer sufferers.Caddie Steve Williams presented the money to Auckland’s Starship Hospital on Tuesday to help fund the construction of a new cancer ward.Williams promised to raise NZ$1 million for the hospital a year ago after visiting child cancer patients.”Obviously we didn’t want to see Tiger out.”But it helped us in a sense because we’ve really got into it in the last three months and it’s been really successful,” he said of his fundraising efforts.
