Floods subside, but tents still needed

SOME people affected by floods in the Kavango Region are still in need of tents, blankets and mosquito nets, Kavango Governor John Thighuru said yesterday.

Thighuru said these people are mostly in the Mukwe constituency. He said his office has asked the Office of the Prime Minister for more tents. Meanwhile, the water levels in the Kavango River and flooded areas in the region have subsided. On Sunday, the chief hydrologist in the Ministry of Agriculture, Guido van Langenhove, said the Kavango water level at Andara is falling.’It seems that the final flood has also passed the lower part of the river but any confirmation from the Okavango River Basin Water Commission (Okacom) channels is missing,’ said Van Langenhove in his daily reports on the floods.Silvanus Uunona, a senior hydrologist at Oshakati, says water levels in the Cuvelai oshanas in the north-central regions have dropped drastically. He said people who were relocated because of the floods have now returned home.Reports from the Caprivi Region say the floods there are continuing. Last week, a number of settlements in Katima Mulilo Rural constituency such as Ibbu, Mutikitila and Mahundu were hit by fresh floods from the Chobe River and Lake Liambezi. absalom@namibian.com.na
