REFERRING to the Ndeshi & Jakes comic strip in the Namibian of Friday, 17 February 2009 (page 4) called ‘Good corruption’, I want to voice my utter disgust at the particular message of the strip. In the particular strip, a taxi driver bribes an official to oceptable if there is a good enough reason? What about the pedestbtain a driving license and thereby puts food on his family’s table.
Are we now saying that corruption is acrian, passenger and/or other driver a taxi driver might kill due to the fact that he is not properly trained and should not have been driving? Who will put food on their families’ tables once he has killed them? Every person has the right to earn a living for themselves and their family, but there is a right and a wrong way. I travel to other African countries extensively and can attest to the fact that a corrupt society is nothing to be proud of. Nobody wants to deal with a corrupt country/society. Every time I come back to Namibia, I feel proud because I do not have deal with people trying to solicit a bribe from me because of any and every insignificant issue they can so easily manufacture. The fact that the Anti Corruption Committee is alive and well is a heartwarming fact and makes the future for this country seem bright. Having seen this morning’s comic strip, I am utterly disappointed, because as Namibians we should be better than that. If you endorse criminal acts like corruption etc, I think you should change your newspaper’s name to ‘Robbers & Crooks’ or something appropriate to that message. Alternatively, change your message!Proud NamibianVia e-mailNote: Your views are noted and will be onpassed to the cartoonist – Ed
