THE HAGUE – Former Liberian President Charles Taylor says a key prosecution witness at his war crimes trial was a low-level official who ‘went crazy’ years before testifying against him.
Taylor has used his seventh day on the witness stand at the Special Court for Sierra Leone to try to discredit witness Varmuyan Sherif, who told judges he was a close Taylor aide.Sherif last year testified that he helped Taylor smuggle arms and ammunition to rebels in Sierra Leone.Taylor insisted yesterday that Sherif was responsible only for his presidential motorcade and later ‘lost his mind’.The court has charged Taylor with 11 counts of murder, rape and recruiting child soldiers by the Sierra Leone militia he is accused of arming and supporting. – Nampa-Sapa
