THE City of Windhoek came under fire on Friday from Women’s Action for Development (WAD) over the across-the-board tariff increases it announced earlier this month.
‘WAD gives people the opportunity to make money and when they have money, the City takes it!,’ WAD Executive Director Veronica de Klerk said at a donation handover in Windhoek. She accused the City of Windhoek’s decision-makers of ‘living in oblivion’ and being ‘completely out of touch with the plight of the already suffering people living in destitution’.De Klerk appealed to City officials to ‘have a heart for the plight of the poor’ and take the disadvantaged into account when making policy decisions. The City Council is also in the hot seat over its latest budget, which allocates funds in a manner that has raised eyebrows.’It (the budget) will be the worst single aggravating factor of poverty and hardship among the poor,’ she declared angrily.’With the tough international economic recession … it is the worst of times to come down so mercilessly on the citizenry, especially on the poor,’ she said.WAD is a non-profit organisation dedicated to improving the socio-economic and socio-political conditions of people living in Namibia’s rural areas.ndapwa@namibian.com
