ENGLAND was the overall winner of the Mini World Cup hockey tournament that took place in Windhoek on Saturday.
It was the eighth successive year that the popular development tournament which was sponsored by Coca-Cola took place, and once again it saw a big turnout of schoolchildren representing their adopted countries. England, which was represented by players from St Paul’s College, were the overall winners with a total of 51 points, while Spain, represented by Windhoek Gymnasium, came second with 45 points. The United States, represented by Windhoek Afrikaanse Privaatskool, came third with 40 points. Scotland came fourth, followed by Germany, Holland and Australia.Spain won the Ambassadorial Trophy for the best team spirit and performance at the opening ceremony, followed by Germany and the United States who tied in second place.The Windhoek Afrikaanse Privaatskool’s Under-14 boys’ team, representing the United States, won the Russel Bartlett Team Award for the team that provided the best advertisement for hockey on the day. The participating schools were St Paul’s College (England and Scotland), Pionierspark (Australia), the Hockey CC Academy (Holland), St George’s (Holland and Germany), Windhoek Gymnasium (Spain) and Windhoek Afrikaanse Privaatskool (USA).Following the tournament All Star teams were selected consisting of the top players in each age group.- www.namibiasport.com.na
