Fridge mechanic causes motorcade mayhem

Fridge mechanic causes motorcade mayhem

A YOUNG man yesterday caused a stir after he almost drove into Founding President Sam Nujoma’s car, in a manner that could be mistaken for an assassination attempt.

The incident happened at Akweenyanga village between Ondangwa and Ongwediva just before lunchtime. It brought the whole of the North to a standstill as news of the incident spread like wildfire. The driver of a maroon Citigolf swerved in and out of Nujoma’s motorcade in an uncontrolled fashion before finally being blocked by the cars driving behind Nujoma’s vehicle and arrested. At one stage, his car was right in front of Nujoma’s car.Sources in Government security organs told The Namibian that the suspect was speeding, allegedly at about 200 kilometres per hour. The suspect is being detained and questioned on a charge of reckless or negligent driving.Senior Government sources told The Namibian that a high-level investigation would be launched to determine whether there had been any malicious intent on the part of the driver. The Namibian was also informed that gas cylinders were found in the suspect’s car. He apparently told the Police that he fixes fridges and uses the gas on a daily basis.Although Police are saying it could just be a straightforward case, some senior Government officials apparently suspect foul play. Nujoma is said to be fine and unaffected by the incident.
