Proceeds from the sale of the recently launched national sport supporters’ attire are set to benefit Namibian athletes.
This has been made possible through the Sports Development Fund, managed by the Namibia Sports Commission (NSC).
NSC spokesperson Givean Samulandela confirmed this on Tuesday.
Samulandela said the business consultant entrusted to produce, market and sell the attire will get a percentage of the profit, while the rest will go towards the fund.
“It’s a reinvestment we collect on behalf of athletes, and then we give back to them through sport development, like training and the preparation of games, like the international games, and so forth,” he said.
The national sport supporters’ attire was launched earlier this week as part of an initiative between the NSC, the Ministry of Sport, Youth and National Service, as well as the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology.
Samulandela said stock will be available from 23 August for purchase.
“The stock is currently under production, and we should receive part of it on Friday. It will be available at our stall at the Ongwediva Annual Trade Fair. The Business Consultants will produce the merchandise and distribute it to designated outlets across the country,” he said.
According to sport minister Agnes Tjongarero, this initiative is meant to enhance national identity and encourage Namibians to support local athletes.
“This initiative not only enhances the visibility of our national identity, but also encourages all Namibians to come together in support of our athletes.
“By wearing the sport supporters’ jersey, we are collectively showing our commitment to our teams and our nation,” she said.
