Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) president McHenry Venaani has urged party members to put the PDM’s interests above their individual desires for leadership positions.

He was delivering the opening remarks at the PDM’s second national elective congress at Katima Mulilo on Friday.

Venaani reminded party members that the process of electing new leaders to carry forward the PDM’s mission requires the highest levels of political maturity.

“Today, as we stand on the threshold of a new era, we must reflect deeply on the significance of our responsibilities. We have built the foundation for democracy, therefore it is up to us to ensure those foundations remain and become resilient.”

Venaani said the congress embodies a critical juncture in the PDM’s history.

“Therefore, as we deliberate, let us remember that our actions must embody the principles of democracy, respect and constitutionalism. It is time for that democracy to be exhibited without fear of favour.”

He noted that all those contesting for positions have the power and the zeal, but only one can win.

“The one that wins should embrace the one that has lost. Don’t lose an election and go join another party.”

He further emphasised the importance of party unity to maintain order.

“Members of the media, hear it from the horse’s mouth – we at PDM are at peace with ourselves,” he added.
