The Namibia National Teachers’ Union (Nantu) officially launched its Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Training Academy at Swakopmund yesterday.

Minister of education, arts and culture Ester Anna Nghipondoka expressed her enthusiasm for the initiative.

“As a ministry, we are well aware of the sometimes difficult teaching environments you operate in, but despite challenges of teachers’ housing, crowded classrooms, inadequate teaching resources, and infrastructure, you continue to deliver education with utmost diligence and passion,” she said.

The academy aims to address several key areas of development.

“Education is a shared responsibility,” Nghipondoka said, adding that the landscape of education continues to evolve rapidly.

“New technologies emerge, pedagogical strategies evolve, and our understanding of learners’ needs deepens. CPD ensures that we are not just keeping pace, but leading the way,” Nghipondoka said.

Erongo governor Neville Andre highlighted the crucial role education plays in the nation’s development.

“Education is the cornerstone of development, the bedrock upon which we build our nation’s prosperity and progress. It is through quality and inclusive education that we can empower our children, youth, and citizens to reach their full potential, ensuring that no one is left behind,” he said.

Nantu secretary general Loide Shaanika outlined the critical issues to be deliberated during the congress.

“The advent of technology and artificial intelligence necessitates that we equip teachers with the required skills and knowledge to adapt and embrace the emerging opportunities and challenges,” she said.

The congress will also witness the publication of research papers commissioned through the Labour Resource and Research Institute by Nantu, focusing on various resolutions from the last congress.

The new leadership will be elected at the end of the congress.
