There are certain things we men tend to overlook despite their importance. In fact, you could argue that they are essential to our daily lives.
Take a moment and think about it. What would life be like without a toothbrush, a facecloth, or even decent socks and boxers? It’s hard to imagine, isn’t it? Yet, many men often neglect these basic items.
If you consider the average man aged 15 to 45, an overwhelming six out of 10 are likely still using old toothbrushes, worn-out facecloths, old socks and torn boxers. What is surprising is that these are some of the most affordable essentials we own.
For instance, replacing a toothbrush and a facecloth together costs around N$150, a small price to pay for personal hygiene and comfort. Yet, we often put off buying new ones, opting instead to use them until the very end.
Let’s talk about the toothbrush. I used to hang on to my toothbrushes way too long, sometimes over two years!
But the truth is, toothbrushes need to be replaced every three to four months. This isn’t just a minor detail; it’s a crucial part of maintaining good oral hygiene.
Many people don’t realise how important it is, but trust me, your teeth will thank you for making the switch regularly.
Importantly, not all toothbrushes are the same. They come in soft, medium and hard varieties, and choosing the right one depends on your gums and how thoroughly you need to brush.
I recommend replacing your toothbrush every three months to ensure it stays effective. And if you’re unsure or want personalised advice, it’s always a good idea to consult your dentist.
Not too long ago, before I decided to step up my grooming game, my facecloth was something I barely gave any thought to. It wasn’t just for my face, I would use it to clean my sneakers too. And when it came to replacing it, I would hold onto it for a year, sometimes even two.
By the time I would finally get around to buying a new one, the old one would be full of holes and worn thin.
Looking back, it’s no wonder my skin wasn’t at its best. I see the same thing happening with others, using facecloths that are practically falling apart and wondering why their skin isn’t glowing.
Also, do we even need facecloths in today’s world? With all the advanced skincare products available, washing your face can be as simple as using your face wash and your hands – nothing more.
It’s all about using the right products and techniques to take care of your skin. So, if you’re still holding onto that old, worn-out facecloth, it might be time to rethink your routine.
A quick question. For how do you wear your boxers?
Personally, I believe one day is enough. It’s not a debate, just a hygiene standard most of us stick to. After all, wearing them for just one day means a lot of laundry, right? So, considering that daily wear and tear, it’s best to replace your boxers every six months. No matter the brand or type, once a day is the rule, and a six-month refresh keeps things fresh.
The number of socks you need depends on the types and quantity of shoes you own. It’s important to match your socks with the right shoes.
Gym socks with formal shoes won’t work. That’s a no-go. Gym socks are usually thicker and can cause damage to your formal shoes.
Instead, invest in a few pairs of silk or dress socks for your formal footwear. The key takeaway: make sure you have a variety of socks to suit your different shoes and occasions. And socks cannot be worn more than three times before washing, hence the importance of having a lot.
These are just a few simple things we can easily improve on, things they don’t teach us in school but that we learn through experience. Take this advice and make the most of it.
Small changes can make a big difference!
