Over 130 000 Namibian ID documents remain uncollected, ministry reports on International Identity Day

The Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security says 130 000 Namibian identity (ID) documents remain uncollected.

Executive director Etienne Maritz said this in a statement on observing International Identity Day on Monday.

“Despite significant progress, challenges remain. In 2001, up to 70 000 identity documents were uncollected. Unfortunately, this issue persists today, with more than 130 000 identity documents not collected,” he said.

The ministry conducted a nationwide mass registration operation from February to July, which resulted in 110 620 people being served.

International Identity Day (ID Day) highlights the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 16.9, which is to provide all with a legal identity. It is observed annually on 16 September.
