Katjimune asks parliament to strike the anti-public gatherings bill

Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) member of parliament Maximalliant Katjimune says the prohibition of public gatherings bill should be rejected as it aims to stifle people’s freedom of expression.

Speaking in parliament, Katjimune says the bill suppresses people’s fundamental human rights which guarantee freedom of expression and association.

The bill has been heavily criticised by civil society and opposition parties as well as human rights advocates.

“When there is public disdain about particular economic and social issues in the country and there is an upsurge in demonstrations because of those issues, the government must deal with the substantive issues as they are and stop trying to be creative by introducing oppressive laws,” he says.

He says the government should concentrate on solving the root cause of problems including unemployment and inequality.
