Namibian police inspector general Joseph Shikongo says officers are exposed to intense trauma and stress.
They must support each other in addressing these challenges, he says.
Shikongo said this during the official opening of the police’s fun sport day in Windhoek on Friday.
The event aimed to observe International Day Against Drug Abuse, Illicit Trafficking, and Suicide Prevention among officers.
“It is very important to actively engage in conversations about the mental health and well-being of members,” he said.
“Suicide is a tragic reality that affects law enforcement globally, and the Namibian Police are no exception,” he said.
Shikongo said the police are committed to creating a supportive environment.
“Through the Khomas suicide task force, we are committed to creating a supportive environment in which every officer has access to help when they need it.
“By combining today’s sporting activities with our focus on mental health, we are sending a clear message that taking care of both
body and mind is essential for a long and healthy career in the force,” he said.
