Impressive showing at youth curling champs

Cobus Harmse shone bright at the 4th Youth Curling Championships at the DTS grounds in Windhoek over the weekend, setting two African Icestock records and securing the under-30 title.

Harmse’s impressive performance included scoring 166 points on the summer surface in the under-30 age group target shooting to claim the first title on Saturday.

With a total score of 284 stock points (118, 166), he also set a new African record in two rounds in this discipline.

Max Feilmeier followed in second place with an equally strong 264 points, having briefly been in the lead before the decisive second round. Both now have a good chance of qualifying for the 2025 World Championships in Austria which takes place in March.

Youth director Denzel Awoseb was delighted that a total of eight players took part in the under-18 age group.

Ricardo Pieters, the youngest participant at 15, caused a surprise in the target shooting. He secured the title with a score of 72 points. Second place went to Jaydien Garoeb with 66 points, followed by Johnny-Boy Hoebeb with 62 points.

In the final of the solo competition, the two group winners, Laude Adams and Queendeline Gowaseb faced off. The former prevailed with an impressive 9-0 victory to secure the title.

“The championships offered exciting competitions and outstanding performances that show great promise for the future of curling in the region,” says Awoseb.
