The Namibia Economic Freedom Fighters (NEFF) has been reinstated on the list of registered political parties to contest in the November presidential and national elections.
This follows a meeting with the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) yesterday.
“The fight is over, we are back,” party deputy leader Longinus Iipumbu said soon after the meeting at the ECN’s headquarters.
According to Iipumbu, the ECN will write a letter to the National Assembly, stating that NEFF’s leadership should be reinstated in parliament and for the party’s funds to be released.
“The ECN will make an announcement, and we will have a press conference later in the day,” he said.
ECN spokesperson De Wet Siluka confirmed the NEFF’s reregistration in a statement yesterday evening.
“The commission will comply with the High Court’s decision and will yield to its guidance in implementing the act.
The commission on 30 September held a meeting with the NEFF, during which it communicated and indicated its position on the matter.
“In the said meeting, the NEFF undertook to heed the commission’s resoluteness to enforce compliance with peremptory provisions of the Electoral Act.
The commission extended the NEFF’s time to ensure compliance with all outstanding items, failing which it will set in motion the process for the suspension of funds appropriated by parliament on account of failure to comply with the requirements of the Electoral Act,” he said.
The commission had deregistered the party after accusing it of failing to publish its audited financial statements in time.
