President Nangolo Mbumba praised teachers for their vital role in shaping Namibia’s future during a World Teachers’ Day message on Saturday.
A former teacher himself, Mbumba highlighted the importance of listening to educators and supporting their needs.
“Today, on World Teachers’ Day, as a former teacher, I recognise the invaluable role of educators in shaping the future of our nation. This year’s theme, ‘Valuing Teachers’ Voices: Towards a New Social Contract for Education,’ resonates deeply with our collective commitment to ensuring that teachers’ voices are not only heard but actively shape the education system and educational outputs,” Mbumba said.
Mbumba also mentioned the government’s ongoing work to improve conditions for teachers and enhance their professional development.
He pointed to the ongoing legislative efforts, noting that the Ministry of Education, Arts, and Culture is working on the Namibia teaching profession bill.
This bill aims to align Namibia’s education system with Sustainable Development Goal 4, the United Nations’ Transforming Education Summit agenda, and the Harambee Prosperity Plan 2.
Once passed, the Professional Teachers Act will elevate the teaching profession by setting ethical standards and promoting continuous professional development.
“We will continue to invest in teacher development, improve their working conditions, create learning environments responsive to the needs of all learners, particularly the most vulnerable, and support innovation in education to meet the demands of a rapidly changing world,” Mbumba said.
He urged government to recommit itself to ensuring that teachers are valued and respected.
“We must continue to build an education system that recognises the indispensable role of teachers in our nation’s development.”
