Pupils from across the Khomas region gathered in the Suiderhof Primary School Hall in Windhoek on Thursday to participate in the Khomas Regional Social Science Quiz.
The platform is dedicated to celebrating knowledge, curiosity and the importance of understanding the world we live in.
Suiderhof Primary School school principal Alna Similo highlighted social studies as not just a subject but a gateway to understanding the forces that shape societies, history and Namibia’s diverse cultures.
She said it teaches young minds to be informed and encourages pupils to be active citizens in a rapidly changing world.
“This discipline encourages pupils to ask questions, think critically and explore different perspectives,” Similo said.
She added that her aspiration for the future of the quiz is that it grows to become a national event, with the collaboration of potential stakeholders.
Encouraging pupils at the quiz, Khomas education inspector Milton ya Otto said: “Today, we are raising awareness of the world around us. Tomorrow, we will be designing and building amazing places in the world.”
He highlighted that social science education in Namibia offers numerous career opportunities and is equally essential to the curriculum.
According to Ya Otto, the quiz will significantly contribute to academic improvement and create a sense of inclusivity among pupils.
He noted that the quiz focuses on the syllabus and provides “a fun way for pupils to study and master the content, encouraging competition and excitement for learning”.
Four pupils from each grade, starting from Grade 4 to Grade 7, were awarded in gold, silver and bronze categories.
The overall award for the top school in the quiz went to Orban Primary School.
