A group of second-year law students from the University of Namibia (Unam) recently launched an initiative to provide mobility aids to those in need.
Group leader Stephanus Martin said the Empowering Mobility Wheelchair Donation Initiative will distribute four wheelchairs and essential toiletries to economically disadvantaged persons with physical disabilities.
“As second-year law students from Unam, we recognise the pressing need for mobility aids in our communities, particularly for economically disadvantaged individuals who face significant barriers to mobility and independence,” Martin said.
The initiative aims to empower recipients by enhancing their ability to participate in society.
“By enhancing mobility, we empower recipients to participate more actively in society, which is crucial for their independence and self-esteem.
“We believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to lead a dignified life, free from the constraints of limited mobility,” he said.
Law student Kuveri Hiiho said the initiative plays a role in encouraging businesses to donate to the communities they serve.
“We are honoured and thankful to Dis-Chem Wernhil for the hampers they donated, adhering to its corporate social responsibility and ethical obligations,” said Hiiho.
Ministry of Health and Social Services spokesperson Walters Kamaya, who received the donation, expressed his gratitude to the students.
“This donation will help us and go a long way,” said Kamaya.
According to Kamaya, the donation came at a time when the Windhoek Central Hospital needs wheelchairs.
